FILM LICENSING

We have made film licensing simple for schools, churches, estates, and event organisers who book our screens for public screenings.
Now you can host a legal outdoor movie event without the hassle of navigating studio permissions yourself.

HOW IT WORKS

Step 1: Choose a Movie
Pick a title from any Hollywood studio or browse our recommended catalogue of films here.

Note: You can show any movie that has been officially released on DVD – even if it is not on our list. Just let us know your choice.

Step 2: Get Licensed
Movie license fees depend on your movie choice, audience size, and whether you are charging admission. Here are the estimated costs:
R35 – R50 per person – if admission is free
– 30% of your ticket price per person – if you’re charging for entry

Licensing approvals usually take 1 – 2 weeks, so please share your top three movie choices to speed up the process.

Step 3: Choose Who Handles the Process
You have two options:

  • You can contact the relevant studio or distributor directly and arrange your own once-off event license, or
  • We can handle the process for you for a flat admin fee of R550.
(Please note: the official movie license fee from the studio will still apply separately once your movie is approved.)

WANT TO SKIP LICENSING FEES?

If you’d like to host a movie night without the added cost of a film license, you can choose from a range of copyright-free (public domain) movies that are legally free to show at public events.

Explore free film options here.

What Are Public Domain Films?
Public domain films are movies whose copyrights have expired or were never renewed — meaning they’re completely free for public use. You can show them at events, share them online, or remix them without paying any licensing fees.
Many of these are timeless classics, family favourites, and vintage treasures perfect for school or community movie nights.

Why Get Licensed?

Licensing ensures your movie event is fully legal and compliant with copyright law –  protecting your school, organisation, or estate from potential penalties.

Support Local Films

Africa is alive with incredible film talent!
We encourage clients to consider showing local or short film content, which often comes with simpler licensing terms and adds a proudly South African touch to your event.
